Slow Cooker Honey Mustard Chicken – Easy Creamy Dinner Recipe

The first time I made this slow cooker honey mustard chicken, I was tested. It was drizzling rain here in New York City, I had just gotten back from the Union Square Greenmarket with a bundle of fresh thyme and a massive head of garlic, and I needed a dinner that would fill our apartment with that sweet, savory warmth we all crave on a gray evening. This slow cooker honey mustard chicken delivered — tender chicken thighs simmered in a honey Dijon garlic sauce that turns velvety and rich with just a splash of cream. It’s one of those easy slow cooker chicken recipes that feels like a hug in a bowl, and it all comes together with almost zero hands-on effort. Growing up in Morocco, my mother would slow-cook tagines with honey and warm spices for hours, and that memory of sweet-savory depth is exactly what inspired this creamy honey mustard chicken. The slow cooker does all the heavy lifting, transforming simple ingredients into something truly special.
Imagine walking into your kitchen after a long day and being greeted by the aroma of garlic, honey, and Dijon mingling together. The chicken emerges fork-tender, bathed in a glossy, creamy mustard sauce that’s just the right balance of sweet and tangy. A pinch of oregano and paprika adds a subtle warmth that echoes my North African roots, while the French-trained cook in me insists on finishing the sauce with a touch of heavy cream for that luxurious texture. Every spoonful of this crockpot honey mustard chicken is silky and satisfying, with the honey caramelizing slightly against the chicken and the mustard cutting through with a bright, sharp note. It’s the kind of dish that makes you slow down and savor the moment — exactly what comfort food dinner should be. I love serving this over creamy mashed potatoes or fluffy rice, letting the sauce soak into every bite. If you are searching for the best honey mustard chicken recipe that delivers on flavor and convenience, this is it.
What sets my version apart is the careful balance of flavors and a few chef-level tricks I picked up during my culinary training in Paris. I use a generous amount of garlic — 23 cloves, to be exact — because garlic mellows into something sweet and almost nutty when slow-cooked. I also add the heavy cream at the very end so it doesn’t curdle, and I offer an optional cornstarch slurry if you prefer a thicker sauce that clings to every piece of chicken. Whether you are making honey mustard chicken breast recipes or using bone-in thighs, this method guarantees moist, flavorful results every time. And if you love sweet-tangy flavors as much as I do, you will also adore my honey garlic chicken — another family favorite that practically cooks itself.
Why This Slow Cooker Honey Mustard Chicken Recipe Is the Best
The Flavor Secret: This slow cooker honey mustard chicken gets its signature taste from the marriage of high-quality Dijon mustard and pure honey. I use a whole-grain Dijon for texture and a mild wildflower honey that isn’t too overpowering. The garlic — all 23 cloves — slowly melts into the sauce, creating a sweet aroma that fills your kitchen. Growing up in Morocco, I learned that honey and savory spices are a match made in heaven, and that principle shines here. A sprinkle of oregano and paprika adds an earthy warmth that complements the sweet-tangy sauce beautifully. This is truly the best honey mustard chicken recipe for anyone who loves bold, layered flavors without spending hours at the stove.
Perfected Texture: One thing my French culinary training taught me is that cream must be treated with respect. Adding it too early can cause it to separate and become grainy. In this creamy honey mustard chicken, I stir in the heavy cream during the last 30 minutes of cooking, allowing it to warm through and blend seamlessly into the sauce. The result is a luscious, velvety sauce that coats each piece of chicken like a dream. If you prefer a thicker, almost glaze-like consistency, a simple cornstarch slurry does the trick without dulling the flavor. The chicken itself stays incredibly moist — whether you are using breasts or thighs — because the slow cooker creates a gentle, humid environment that locks in every drop of juice.
Foolproof & Fast: This is one of the most forgiving easy slow cooker chicken recipes I know. You don’t need to sear the chicken first (though you can if you want extra color). You don’t need to stand over the pot stirring. Just season, mix the sauce, pour it over, and let the slow cooker work its magic. It’s the ultimate set it and forget it meals for busy weeknights. Whether you are cooking for your family or meal-prepping for the week, this slow cooker dinner recipes staple delivers consistent, delicious results every single time. For another no-fuss dinner, try my crockpot chicken and rice — it’s just as effortless and equally satisfying.
Slow Cooker Honey Mustard Chicken Ingredients
I love that most of these ingredients are pantry staples I always have on hand. The Dijon mustard and honey come together to create that signature sweet-tangy base, while the garlic — I buy whole heads from the farmers market here in NYC — adds a deep, mellow richness. The herbs and spices are simple but essential, and the heavy cream is what takes this from a simple chicken dish to a truly luxurious creamy honey mustard chicken. When I’m shopping for ingredients, I look for a good-quality Dijon mustard — preferably one made with white wine — and a honey that’s not too crystallized so it blends smoothly into the sauce. This dijon honey chicken recipe comes together beautifully with just a handful of components, and each one plays a vital role in the final flavor.
Ingredients List
- 1.5 lb chicken breast (about 4 pieces, 6 oz. each) or chicken thighs
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1 tsp paprika
- ¼ tsp onion powder
- ½ tsp pepper
- ½ tsp salt
- ¼ cup honey
- ¼ cup Dijon mustard
- 2 Tbsp butter, melted
- 23 garlic cloves, minced
- ¼ cup heavy cream
- Optional (for thickening): 2 Tbsp cornstarch + 4 Tbsp cold water
Ingredient Spotlight
Dijon Mustard: This is the backbone of the sauce. Look for a Dijon that lists white wine as an ingredient — it has a sharper, more complex flavor than basic yellow mustard. If you only have regular yellow mustard, use it, but the flavor will be less refined. For a milder version, try whole-grain Dijon, which adds lovely little bursts of mustard seed in every bite. In this slow cooker honey mustard chicken, the Dijon provides that signature tang that balances the sweetness of the honey perfectly.
Honey: Choose a mild, runny honey like clover or orange blossom. Stronger honeys like buckwheat can overpower the dish. Honey is what gives this recipe its sweet, sticky glaze and helps caramelize the edges of the chicken as it cooks. If you are out of honey, maple syrup works as a substitute, though the flavor will shift slightly toward a more woodsy sweetness. For a healthy honey mustard chicken twist, use raw honey — it adds a subtle floral note that pairs beautifully with the Dijon.
Garlic: Yes, 23 cloves sounds like a lot, but trust me — when garlic slow-cooks, it becomes sweet, mellow, and almost buttery. I mince it finely so it disperses evenly through the sauce. If you are short on time, use pre-minced garlic from a jar, but fresh garlic gives a far superior depth of flavor. This is the secret ingredient that elevates this honey mustard chicken and potatoes pairing into something truly memorable.
Heavy Cream: This is what creates the luscious, velvety finish. I always add it during the last 30 minutes so it doesn’t curdle. For a dairy-free version, full-fat coconut milk works surprisingly well — it adds a faint tropical note that complements the honey. If you want a lighter sauce, you can use half-and-half, but it won’t be quite as thick and creamy. This finishing touch is what makes this the best honey mustard chicken recipe for creamy sauce lovers.
| Original Ingredient | Best Substitution | Flavor / Texture Impact |
|---|---|---|
| Dijon mustard | Whole-grain mustard + 1 tsp white wine vinegar | More texture, slightly less sharp but still tangy |
| Honey | Maple syrup or agave nectar | Maple adds woodsy sweetness; agave is milder and thinner |
| Heavy cream | Full-fat coconut milk or half-and-half | Coconut adds tropical note; half-and-half is lighter, less rich |
| Chicken breast | Bone-in chicken thighs or boneless skinless thighs | Thighs are juicier, more forgiving; breasts cook faster |
| Butter | Olive oil or ghee | Olive oil adds fruity note; ghee adds nuttiness |
How to Make Slow Cooker Honey Mustard Chicken — Step-by-Step
Making this slow cooker honey mustard chicken is truly a breeze. I’ll walk you through each step with the same care I use in my own kitchen, from prepping the chicken to finishing the sauce. Follow along, and you will have a restaurant-quality meal with almost no effort.
Step 1: Season the Chicken
Pat the chicken dry with paper towels — this helps the seasoning stick and ensures a better texture. In a small bowl, mix together the salt, pepper, oregano, onion powder, and paprika. Sprinkle the seasoning evenly over all sides of the chicken. If you have time, let the seasoned chicken rest for 10 minutes while you prepare the sauce. This simple step builds a foundation of flavor that makes this creamy honey mustard chicken taste deeply seasoned, not just saucy.
💡 Lora’s Pro Tip: Patting the chicken dry is not optional — moisture on the surface dilutes the seasoning and prevents the sauce from adhering. A dry surface means every bite of this slow cooker honey mustard chicken is packed with flavor.
Step 2: Make the Sauce
In a medium bowl, whisk together the honey, Dijon mustard, minced garlic, and melted butter until smooth and well combined. The mixture should be thick but pourable. Pour this sauce evenly over the chicken in the slow cooker, making sure each piece is well coated. The honey and Dijon create that signature sweet-tangy profile that defines this dijon honey chicken recipe, while the garlic begins its slow transformation into sweetness.
⚠️ Common Mistake to Avoid: Don’t use cold butter straight from the fridge — melt it first so it incorporates smoothly into the sauce. Cold butter can seize up and leave the sauce grainy. For the silkiest sauce in this crockpot honey mustard chicken, melted butter is key.
Step 3: Slow Cook to Perfection
Cover the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 3 hours, or until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F. I recommend checking at the 2-hour mark if your slow cooker runs hot, as some models cook faster than others. The chicken is ready when it shreds easily with a fork and the sauce has thickened slightly. This gentle cooking method is what makes this slow cooker honey mustard chicken so incredibly tender and juicy.
💡 Lora’s Pro Tip: If you are using chicken breasts, check doneness at 2 hours — they can dry out if cooked too long. Bone-in thighs are more forgiving and can go the full 3 hours. For the juiciest honey mustard chicken thighs, bone-in, skin-on is always my first choice.
Step 4: Shred or Chop
Once the chicken is fully cooked and tender, remove it from the slow cooker and place it on a cutting board. Use two forks to shred the chicken into bite-sized pieces, or cut it into chunks if you prefer a more structured texture. Return the chicken to the slow cooker and stir it into the sauce. This step allows every piece of this tender shredded chicken to soak up all that delicious honey mustard goodness.
⚠️ Common Mistake to Avoid: Don’t shred the chicken too finely — it can turn mushy when stirred back into the sauce. Aim for chunky, fork-tender pieces that hold their shape. This sweet tangy chicken dinner is all about texture, and good-sized pieces make every bite satisfying.
Step 5: Add the Cream
About 30 minutes before you plan to serve, pour the heavy cream into the slow cooker and stir gently to combine. Cover and cook on LOW for another 30 minutes. The cream warms through and melds with the honey mustard sauce, creating a rich, velvety finish that defines this creamy honey mustard chicken. Do not add the cream earlier, or it may separate and become grainy.
💡 Lora’s Pro Tip: For an even richer sauce, use crème fraîche instead of heavy cream. It adds a slight tang that enhances the Dijon and honey beautifully. This is a classic French trick I learned in Paris, and it takes this creamy honey mustard chicken to the next level.
Step 6: Thicken (Optional)
If you prefer a thicker sauce that clings to the chicken like a glaze, whisk 2 tablespoons of cornstarch with 4 tablespoons of cold water until smooth. Stir this slurry into the slow cooker during the last 30 minutes of cooking, alongside the cream. The sauce will thicken beautifully without becoming pasty. This step is perfect if you are serving this slow cooker honey mustard chicken over rice or mashed potatoes and want the sauce to really coat everything.
⚠️ Common Mistake to Avoid: Always mix cornstarch with cold water first — adding it directly to the hot sauce will create lumps. A smooth slurry ensures a silky, lump-free finish for this creamy mustard sauce.
Step 7: Serve and Enjoy
Spoon the slow cooker honey mustard chicken over your favorite base — mashed potatoes, rice, egg noodles, or roasted vegetables all work wonderfully. Garnish with a sprinkle of fresh parsley or chives for a pop of color and a hint of freshness. Serve immediately while the sauce is warm and creamy. This is the kind of meal that makes everyone at the table smile, and it’s ready with minimal fuss.
💡 Lora’s Pro Tip: For a complete one-pot meal, add cubed potatoes or baby carrots to the slow cooker at the beginning. They cook alongside the chicken and soak up all that honey mustard flavor. This honey mustard chicken and potatoes combo is a family favorite in my NYC kitchen.
| Step | Action | Duration | Key Visual Cue |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Season chicken | 5 mins | Even coating of spices on all sides |
| 2 | Make sauce | 5 mins | Smooth, thick, golden-brown sauce |
| 3 | Slow cook | 3 hrs on LOW | Chicken reaches 165°F, shreds easily |
| 4 | Shred chicken | 5 mins | Fork-tender, chunky pieces |
| 5 | Add cream | 30 mins | Sauce turns pale gold, creamy |
| 6 | Thicken (optional) | 30 mins | Sauce coats spoon, glossy sheen |
| 7 | Serve | 5 mins | Sauce clings to chicken, garnished |
Serving & Presentation
This slow cooker honey mustard chicken is wonderfully versatile when it comes to serving. I love spooning it over a mound of buttery mashed potatoes — the creamy sauce seeps into every crevice and makes each bite heavenly. For a lighter option, serve it over steamed rice or cauliflower rice for a low carb chicken recipe that still feels indulgent. Egg noodles are another favorite in my house; their texture catches the sauce perfectly. For a complete meal, add a simple green vegetable like steamed broccoli or a crisp side salad with a lemony vinaigrette to contrast the richness of the dish.
When it comes to presentation, I like to transfer the chicken to a shallow serving bowl and spoon the sauce generously over the top. A sprinkle of fresh parsley or chives adds a bright, herbal note that lifts the dish visually and flavor-wise. If I’m feeling nostalgic for my Parisian training, I might drizzle a tiny bit of extra honey over the top and add a few whole-grain mustard seeds for texture. This dish is a regular on my weeknight rotation because it feels special but requires almost no effort — exactly what a weeknight dinner idea should be. For a cozy dinner party, pair it with a crisp white wine like Sauvignon Blanc or a light Chardonnay that complements the creamy mustard sauce. And if you are looking for more inspiration, my creamy slow cooker chicken recipes collection has plenty of family-friendly options.
| Pairing Type | Suggestions | Why It Works |
|---|---|---|
| Side Dish | Mashed potatoes, steamed rice, egg noodles, cauliflower rice | Absorb the creamy sauce, balancing richness with starch |
| Sauce / Dip | Extra honey mustard sauce, garlic aioli, tzatziki | Enhances the sweet-tangy profile, adds coolness if needed |
| Beverage | Sauvignon Blanc, light Chardonnay, iced tea with lemon | Acidity cuts through cream, citrus notes echo Dijon tang |
| Garnish | Fresh parsley, chives, microgreens, a drizzle of honey | Adds color, freshness, and a touch of sweetness |
Make-Ahead, Storage & Reheating
This slow cooker honey mustard chicken is a meal-prep dream. I often make a double batch on Sunday and enjoy it throughout the week for easy lunches and dinners. The flavors actually deepen and meld overnight, so leftovers taste even better the next day. Here is how I store and reheat mine to keep that creamy texture just right, even after a few days in the fridge. For more family friendly dinner ideas that store well, check out my easy weeknight chicken dinners.
| Method | Container | Duration | Reheating Tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Refrigerator | Airtight glass container | 3-4 days | Reheat gently on stovetop over low heat, stirring often. Add a splash of milk or broth if sauce thickens too much. |
| Freezer | Freezer-safe zip-top bag or rigid container | 2-3 months | Thaw overnight in fridge. Reheat in a covered skillet over medium-low, adding a splash of cream to restore richness. |
| Make-Ahead | Slow cooker insert (refrigerated) | Up to 2 days in advance | Remove from fridge 30 mins before reheating. Reheat on LOW in the slow cooker for 1-2 hours, stirring halfway. |
When reheating, the most important thing is to use gentle heat. High heat can cause the cream sauce to separate and become grainy. I prefer the stovetop for small portions — just a nonstick skillet over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally until warmed through. If the sauce has thickened too much in the fridge, I add a tablespoon of milk or chicken broth to loosen it up. The flavor of this slow cooker honey mustard chicken only gets better with time, so don’t be afraid to make it ahead. The honey and Dijon continue to meld, creating an even deeper, more complex taste by day two. For busy New Yorkers like me, having this ready in the fridge is a lifesaver on hectic weeknights when I need a quick dinner idea that feels homemade.
Variations & Easy Swaps
One of the things I love most about this slow cooker honey mustard chicken is how adaptable it is. Whether you are cooking for dietary restrictions, using what you have on hand, or simply craving a flavor twist, there are so many ways to make it your own. Here are some of my favorite variations, each tested in my own kitchen.
| Variation | Key Change | Best For | Difficulty Impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moroccan Honey & Spice | Add 1 tsp cumin, ½ tsp cinnamon, and ¼ tsp cayenne | Warm, aromatic twist on classic honey mustard | Easy |
| Dairy-Free / Keto | Replace heavy cream with full-fat coconut milk | Low carb, dairy-free, paleo-friendly | Easy |
| Apple Cider Honey Mustard | Add 2 Tbsp apple cider vinegar and 1 finely chopped apple | Fall-inspired, tangy-sweet twist | Easy |
Moroccan Honey & Spice
This variation is a nod to my Moroccan roots and the tagines my mother used to make. Simply add 1 teaspoon of ground cumin, ½ teaspoon of cinnamon, and ¼ teaspoon of cayenne pepper to the seasoning mix. The cumin and cinnamon add a warm, earthy depth that pairs beautifully with the honey, while the cayenne brings a gentle heat that lingers on the palate. This version transforms the slow cooker honey mustard chicken into something truly exotic — serve it with couscous and roasted carrots for a complete meal that transports you straight to a Moroccan souk. The spices meld with the creamy honey mustard sauce in a way that is both familiar and entirely new.
Dairy-Free / Keto Version
For a dairy-free and low carb chicken recipe, swap the heavy cream with full-fat coconut milk. The coconut milk adds a subtle tropical sweetness that complements the honey beautifully, and it keeps the sauce rich and creamy without any dairy. If you are following a keto diet, this version fits perfectly — just serve the crockpot honey mustard chicken over cauliflower rice or steamed vegetables to keep the carb count low. I tested this variation for a friend with dairy sensitivities, and it was a hit. The sauce may be slightly thinner than the original, so consider using the cornstarch slurry if you prefer a thicker consistency. For more keto-friendly ideas, browse my low carb slow cooker meals.
Apple Cider Honey Mustard
This fall-inspired twist is one of my favorites, especially when the apple orchards upstate start their harvest. Add 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to the sauce and stir in one finely chopped apple (Honeycrisp or Gala work wonderfully). The vinegar brightens the tanginess of the Dijon, while the apple pieces soften and sweeten as they cook, creating little pockets of fruitiness throughout the dish. This honey mustard chicken breast recipes variation is incredible served over mashed sweet potatoes or with a side of roasted Brussels sprouts. The combination of sweet apple, tangy mustard, and creamy sauce is pure autumn comfort. When I make this version, I always think of the Union Square Greenmarket in October — it’s a taste of the season in every bite.
How long should you cook honey mustard chicken in a slow cooker?
For this slow cooker honey mustard chicken, cook on LOW for 3 hours if using chicken breasts, or up to 4 hours if using bone-in chicken thighs. The internal temperature should reach 165°F. Check at the 2-hour mark if your slow cooker runs hot. Cooking longer than recommended can dry out the chicken, so set a timer. This gentle cooking method ensures the honey Dijon garlic sauce infuses the meat while keeping it fork-tender and juicy.
Can you use chicken breasts instead of thighs for slow cooker honey mustard chicken?
Yes, absolutely. This slow cooker honey mustard chicken works beautifully with boneless skinless chicken breasts. The key is to check for doneness a little earlier — around 2 to 2.5 hours on LOW — since breasts cook faster and can dry out if overcooked. Chicken thighs are more forgiving and remain juicier due to their higher fat content. For the best results with breasts, use thick-cut pieces and avoid opening the lid too often during cooking.
What can I serve with slow cooker honey mustard chicken?
This slow cooker honey mustard chicken pairs wonderfully with mashed potatoes, steamed rice, egg noodles, or cauliflower rice for a low-carb option. The creamy honey mustard sauce is the star, so choose a base that soaks it up. For vegetables, try roasted broccoli, green beans, or a simple side salad. I also love serving it with crusty bread to mop up every last drop of that luscious sauce. It is a versatile dish that fits any weeknight dinner menu.
How do you thicken the honey mustard sauce in a slow cooker?
To thicken the sauce for this slow cooker honey mustard chicken, whisk 2 tablespoons of cornstarch with 4 tablespoons of cold water until smooth. Stir the slurry into the slow cooker during the last 30 minutes of cooking. The sauce will thicken to a glossy, glaze-like consistency without becoming pasty. If you prefer a naturally thicker sauce, you can also remove the lid during the last 30 minutes to allow some liquid to evaporate, but the cornstarch method is more reliable and consistent.
Can I make this slow cooker honey mustard chicken dairy-free?
Yes, making this slow cooker honey mustard chicken dairy-free is easy. Replace the heavy cream with full-fat coconut milk or a dairy-free cream alternative. The coconut milk adds a subtle tropical sweetness that pairs well with the honey and Dijon. Use olive oil instead of butter for the sauce base. The texture will be slightly less rich but still wonderfully creamy. This variation is perfect for those following a dairy-free or paleo diet without sacrificing flavor.
Is this slow cooker honey mustard chicken recipe healthy?
This slow cooker honey mustard chicken can be part of a balanced diet. Each serving contains about 340 calories, 38 grams of protein, 16 grams of carbohydrates, and 13 grams of fat. It is high in protein and can be made lower in carbs by serving over cauliflower rice instead of potatoes. To reduce sugar, use a sugar-free honey substitute or reduce the honey to 3 tablespoons. For a healthy honey mustard chicken option, pair it with steamed vegetables and a light side salad.
Can I freeze slow cooker honey mustard chicken?
Yes, this slow cooker honey mustard chicken freezes beautifully. Allow the dish to cool completely, then transfer it to an airtight freezer-safe container or zip-top bag. It will keep for up to 3 months. To reheat, thaw overnight in the refrigerator and warm gently on the stovetop over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally. Add a splash of milk or broth if the sauce has thickened too much. The flavors actually deepen after freezing, making it a great make-ahead meal for busy weeks.
What is the best mustard for slow cooker honey mustard chicken?
For the best slow cooker honey mustard chicken, I recommend using a high-quality Dijon mustard made with white wine. It has a sharp, complex tang that balances the sweetness of the honey perfectly. Whole-grain Dijon adds texture with tiny mustard seeds that pop in your mouth. Avoid using plain yellow mustard, as it lacks the depth and acidity needed for this dish. If you only have spicy brown mustard, it will work but will change the flavor profile slightly — still delicious, just different.
Can I add vegetables to the slow cooker with the chicken?
Absolutely. Adding vegetables to this slow cooker honey mustard chicken makes it a complete one-pot meal. Cubed potatoes, baby carrots, and sliced onions work beautifully — add them at the beginning so they cook through. For quicker-cooking vegetables like green beans or peas, stir them in during the last 30 minutes. The vegetables soak up the honey mustard sauce and become incredibly flavorful. This honey mustard chicken and potatoes combination is especially popular in my household for its ease and heartiness.
How do I prevent the cream from curdling in slow cooker honey mustard chicken?
To prevent curdling in this slow cooker honey mustard chicken, always add the heavy cream during the last 30 minutes of cooking, not at the beginning. The cream should be at room temperature when you stir it in — cold cream can shock the sauce and cause separation. Use full-fat heavy cream rather than half-and-half or milk, as higher fat content is more stable. Finally, cook on LOW heat after adding the cream; high heat can cause dairy to curdle. Follow these tips for a silky, smooth sauce every time.
